Natalie Portman is everywhere these days. The 29-year-old actress gave an award-winning performance in Black Swan, announced her pregnancy and engagement to choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and will star in this year’s No Strings Attached, Your Highness, and Thor. Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about the smart and talented Natalie Portman.
1. Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel on June 9, 1981. Her given name is Natalie Hershlag and she is a duel citizen of the United States and Israel. Though Portman loves the U.S., she says Jerusalem is where her heart is and where she feels most at home.
2. Portman’s paternal great grandparents died at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Another great-grandmother was a spy for British Intelligence during World War II
3. While working on the Stars Wars films, Portman studied psychology at Harvard University. The actress completed her bachelor’s degree in 2003. Natalie told the New York Post she’d “rather be smart than a movie star.”
4. Portman has studied Hebrew, French, Japanese, German, and Arabic.
5. Portman started acting at around age 5. When the actress was 10, Revlon cosmetics offered her a modeling contract, but Portman turned them down to focus on acting.
6. At age 13, Portman appeared in her first film, Léon (known in the United States as The Professional). The actress has worked almost every year since.
7. Portman voiced Bart Simpson's girlfriend Darcy in the episode "Little Big Girl" of The Simpsons' 18th season.
8. In May 2008, Portman served as the youngest member of the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival jury.
9. Portman has won a Teen Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award, a National Board of Review Award, a San Diego Film Critics Society Award, a Constellation Award, a Saturn Award, and a New York Films Critic Online Award. 10. Portman met her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, on the set of Black Swan. The pair was in Palm Springs on Saturday for the 22nd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. The actress took home the Desert Palm Achievement Award.
