The first official photo from Steven Soderbergh's action film Haywire was recently released, showing sexy MMA star Gina "Conviction" Carano going crazy with a machine gun. Carano was the inspiration for the film, as Soderbergh was watching her fight when he got the idea. "I thought, someone should really build a movie around her, so I did", he said.
The 29-year-old Texan had just lost the first fight of her career when she agreed to meet the director in the summer of 2009. Two days later, Soderbergh offered her the lead, alongside actors Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, and Michael Douglas.
Carano plays a black-ops super-soldier seeking vengeance after she’s betrayed during one of her missions. As her own stunt woman, she experienced a new kind of energy. "When I’m training for a fight, I beat myself up all day long," she said. "Filming a movie was draining in such a different way. Every day I woke up and was on some sort of adrenaline rush - I always felt high."
Before filming the movie, Carano was considering quitting MMA. However, this experience has made her want to continue. "I got home after this incredible, life-changing experience, and had to think about who I was," she said. "I knew I had to go back to fighting."
She was scheduled to fight June 18th but had to withdraw due to medical issues. The next possible date for her return to MMA is July 30th. Until then, fans can flock to Comic-Con in San Diego to see her promoting Haywire on July 22nd. The film will hit theaters January 20th, 2012.
