Matthew Gray Gubler’s nerdy charm in the hit TV drama Criminal Minds has won the hearts of women all over the country. We’re slowly discovering that Matthew’s quirkiness may not be much different than that of his character Dr. Spencer Reid on the show. A recent interview delved into what he was like in college and just last week he directed an episode of Criminal Minds! Oh, and in addition to be attractive, accomplished and creative; he’s also an artist!
Matthew studied film at NYU and his specialty is spooky with a bit of peculiarity to it. This explains why the actor/director/artist has had so much success on a show that could literally give you nightmares! His approach is a bit different than the standard on the show though. If Matthew had it his way, we wouldn’t see the guts or the gore. Not because he’s a sweet guy who doesn’t want you to be haunted by the frightful images, but because he thinks our minds can freak us out a little more when we can’t see exactly what’s going on and you’ll never guess where he learned this from.
"To me, the effect is always heightened when you only see, like, a hand behind a doorway. You know something is there and your brain has to create the image. It's so much more powerful," said Matthew. "I feel like such a d----bag talking about it! But when you show a dismembered figure with a gut hanging out, you know exactly what it looks like and it loses its mystery and its wonder. I really cite Walt Disney as teaching me everything I know. It sounds crazy, but I'm serious! In Bambi, the mother dies, but you don't see the corpse. You see the father, the stag, come up and you see Bambi alone, and that has so much more impact than seeing a mutilated deer. It's my personal feeling, but at the same time, I think our show works as it is."
This is an aspect he worked into the episode “Heathridge Manor,” which aired on April 4. It had an eerie vibe, minus the bloody mess! In addition to directing, Matthew also contributed something else to the episode. The artist they hired to do some spooky painting for the show was too good. They were hoping for something less precise and after a few attempts to correct the issues Matthew just took the brush into his own hands. He painted over the artist’s work and created the energy and emotion that they needed to convey in the show. Apparently he does some painting and sketching in his spare time because this isn’t his art debut on Criminal Minds. Back in Season 2, they used Matthew’s sketch of guest star Anton Yelchin rather than the professionals!
Like any other actor out there, Matthew does have some ghosts, or maybe we should say turtles, in his closet. This video of him in Japan dressed as a turtle singing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid hit the internet and went viral in no time!
