While most men are content to lust after Playboy Playmates, Victoria’s Secret vixens, and SI Swimsuit stunners, some fellows prefer women with a look that is a bit…untraditional. That’s where the SuicideGirls come in.

Despite their attention grabbing name, the SuicideGirls, or SGs for short, aren’t into self destruction. They’re simply a community of sexy punk rock, goth, and emo girls who celebrate “alternative beauty and alternative culture from all over the world.”

The SuicideGirls have enjoyed a lot of success over the years. According to the website, the tattooed, pierced, and pink haired beauties have appeared on the cover of over 500 international magazines, opened for Guns ‘N Roses, starred in numerous music videos, and been named the #3 Sexiest Job in Hollywood according to E! Not bad for a website full of women society deems strange and/or undesirable.

Just about anyone can apply to be a SuicideGirl. SG hopefuls simply fill out a short application, shoot and submit a photoset, give staff and members a chance to review the set, and then, hopefully, earn a coveted spot on the SG roster. However, SG wannabes should be prepared for some stiff competition. According to Bitch Magazine, over 350 young women apply to become a SuicideGirl each week but very few make the cut. There are currently 2,179 SuicideGirls from all over the world.

Some critics have pointed out that despite their tattoos, piercings, and wild hair colors, the SuicideGirls still fall within the confines of mainstream beauty. That is, the vast majority of girls are thin, white, and traditionally beautiful. As Bitch Magazine describes it, the SuicideGirls are like members of the varsity cheerleader team with a makeover from Hot Topic. Even site co-founder “Spooky” Suicide acknowledges the strange disconnect.

“There is an idea of beauty that is just Western media, and it permeates how we choose girls as well. And that’s where we may be failing,” he told Punk Planet.
