Back in 2008, the FDNY shut down its annual fire department calendar because of the department’s firemen was found to be in a gay porn movie. Now, however, the cash-strapped fire department has decided to reinstate its shirtless/man-in-uniform calendar in order to raise money. This time, however, proceeds won’t go to charity, though, but to the ailing department itself.

The calendar is expected to raise $300,000 and will buy equipment for fire houses around New York City. The department is teaming up with the non-profit group FDNY Foundation to produce the Calendar of Heroes.

The department is low on cash thanks to budget cuts, and calendar publisher Alan Batt said, “A woman from the FDNY said they’re looking to buy equipment for firehouses because of the [budget] cuts.”

Though the equipment seems to be much needed, not everyone is happy about the new allocation of funds from the calendar. Louis Femia, 31, of Ladder 87, whose nickname is “The Gift” (thanks to his muscles), said he wasn’t happy to hear that calendar proceeds were going to pay for equipment instead of charity.

“It’s a shame,” Femia said, but added, “It’s a good moneymaker and a lot of fun.”
